Common Questions
How long does a project take?
Is my family data private?
What if I have existing records?
Each family history is different. Timelines can vary based on the depth and availability of existing records, surname commonality, and researcher availability. It can typically range from 3 to 12 months for a comprehensive story.
Absolutely. All of your data and personal details are handled with the utmost confidentiality, never shared without your permission, and used solely to research your family history. I adhere to strict ethical guidelines.
Excellent! Your existing family trees, documents, or oral histories are invaluable starting points. I will verify and integrate them into our research to build a richer, more accurate narrative.
How much will it cost?
I'm adopted, can you find my relatives?
My family isn't from the UK, does that matter?
My standard hourly rate is £30. I will scale my research to fit whatever you are willing to spend and let you know exactly what to expect.
Additional costs for certificates and records will never be applied without your approval.
Every adoption case is unique. A free initial consultation can help me to understand your own story and answer this better. If I can't help you, I will always try to connect you with someone who can.
Whilst I specialise in UK records, I do research internationally. Where a trail runs out, I will always try to connect you with someone who has the local expertise to continue your story.
Do you always get results?
My grandma says we're related to royalty!
What if you find something I don't like?
Whilst every endeavour will be made to build your family tree, there are sometimes gaps in records that can prevent us from connecting generations. An initial consultation can help me to manage your expectations appropriately.
Maybe. Maybe not. It's a common family rumour that somewhere in our history we are connected to royalty. That can sometimes be true, other times not. However, I believe that the most interesting stories are the ones about ordinary people.
Family tree research can sometimes expose stories from history we find hard to process. During your consultation we can discuss any specific sensitivities you may have, and how best to approach sharing these findings.
Can you make my family story into a film?
Yes. We can absolutely discuss the options for filmed versions of your family story. We can even capture live reveals for your family members. The research process remains the same and I will always begin by building your family tree.
What does the consultation involve?
During your consultation I can answer any questions you may have. We will discuss what you already know about your family, and what you hope to find out. We can also discuss any sensitivities, data protection and budget.
What if I change my mind?
You can ask me to stop researching at any point and I will only bill you for work completed up to that date.
Can you adapt the way you work for me?
Absolutely, let me know your access needs when you get in touch. Whether you'd prefer phone calls to video, large-print or audio versions of your story, or anything else, just tell me. Family history should be open to everyone.
